ISIR Spring Meeting – Held on 23rd and 24th of May 2025

The ISIR Spring meeting was held on 23rd and 24th of May 2025 in the Royal College of Surgeons. This marked the 30th year of the society. Our guest speaker and ISIR medal recipient was Professor Peter Mueller. Professor Mueller is a pioneer in interventional radiology and a mentor to many of our consultant body here in Ireland. His talk on the Friday evening was entitled “ Interventional Radiology: Are we who we think we are?”

We also had talks from The President of the Irish Medical Council, Professor Suzanne Crowe who spoke about “Regulation in radiology – Now and in the future” and from Dr Lorna Ross, head of Design & Creative Media at Atlantic Technological University about Design, Innovation and Medical Technology. The complications session was led by Professor Mueller on Saturday morning. A huge amount of entries were made to the Professor Lee research medal.

A final group of eight presented their work on Saturday morning with the winning entry being awarded to Dr Philip Mulryan of Cork University Hospital for his study entitled “Hepatic hilar nerve block as an adjunct to hepatic tumour microwave ablation”.

Other talks during the meeting included Dr Michael Brasil outlining the role of virtual reality sedation and medical hypnosis in IR, Dr Geoffrey Ronan who spoke about emergency pulmonary thrombectomy and Dr Ger Healy discussed advancements in percutaneous biliary intervention. In addition Professor Lee updated us on the National Clinical Program in IR and the Model of Care document and Professor Paddy Nicholson launched the Interventional Radiology Academic Research Group, a combined research initiative between interventional radiology and interventional neuroradiology.

Finally to mark the occasion of our 30th birthday a cake was cut by Professor Michael Lee.
